As part of our Grade 2 Science Unit we will be talking about drinking water and what a valuable resource it actually is to us. We will be looking at how organizations are helping out people living in parts of the world with clean drinking water issues.
We will especially be looking at the BioSand Water filter that is being used in many parts of the world. We will be making one and figuring out how it works because it is very simple and effective at the same time.
Please check out the following two video clips to get a better picture of how these filters actually work.

If we can raise $150 we can help Samaritan's Purse build another BioSand filter to provide someone with clean and safe drinking water. |

Fundraising efforts
In the past few days, our students have been doing some serious fundraising. When we started collecting money for the BioSand filter it took a few days for the students to realize that we are serious about this project. Once they got into the swing of it, they started going from house to house, knocking on doors and asking for spare change.
From what I heard, most of the students got quite emotional about it. They even asked their parent, "What if you had to drink dirty water?" or "What if you had to give our baby brother dirty water to drink?" In any case, all of my students did a great job in finding people willing to contribute to our project. Many thanks to everyone who contributed!

Results
It took us two weeks to reach our goal and beyond. We ended up with more money than we were aiming for. Our original plan was to collect $150 for a BioSand filter for Samaritans Purse. Well, while we were busy collecting we discovered that Gospel For Asia is doing the same thing for $30. So now we have enough to buy one for both of those organizations.
Our grand total that we collected came to $187.00. That means we will also have a few dollars left over once we have bought the BioSand filters. We may spend that on some chickens, or rabbits. We will have to take a vote on it!
